How to play Pantrydle

Pantrydle is a LoLdle-style attribute guessing game built around everyday dishes. Each UTC day, the site picks one secret recipe from a bank of original dish profiles. You search the dish list, submit a guess, and receive an eight-cell feedback row. The goal is simple: make every attribute turn green before you run out of eight guesses.

Unlike craft-grid or tile-merge food games, Pantrydle never asks you to invent recipes on a board. You are always naming a complete dish and reading comparative clues. That keeps the loop fast on phones, easy to share as an emoji grid, and friendly for players who enjoy deduction more than typing free-form answers into the void.

The eight attributes

Every dish in the bank is tagged with the same eight fields so comparisons stay fair:

  • Cuisine — Italian, Japanese, Mexican, and more.
  • Main ingredient — chicken, pasta, tofu, cheese, and other primaries.
  • Cook method — bake, fry, simmer, grill, steam, raw, and related techniques.
  • Taste — savory, spicy, sweet, umami, mild, and similar profiles.
  • Time band — Quick, Medium, or Long (ordered; arrows apply).
  • Difficulty — Easy, Medium, or Hard (ordered; arrows apply).
  • Vegetarian — vegetarian-friendly versus meat-based.
  • Temp — Hot or Cold as typically served.

Reading an example row

Suppose you guess Margherita Pizza and the feedback shows green for Cuisine (Italian), green for Temp (Hot), yellow-close is rare and mainly used when cuisine families overlap, gray misses on Main and Method, and an up arrow on Difficulty. That pattern tells you the answer is still Italian and hot, but not pizza-like in method or protein, and that the secret dish is harder than Easy. Your next guess should keep the greens, abandon the misses, and step Difficulty upward.

Time and Difficulty are the only ordered scales. An ↑ means the answer sits higher on the scale than your guess; a ↓ means lower. All other attributes are exact match or miss (with a limited close state for cuisine). Treat greens as locks, arrows as direction, and grays as exclusions.

Daily UTC reset and streaks

The daily puzzle uses a UTC date seed, so a player in Tokyo and a player in New York see the same dish for the same UTC calendar day. Progress for that day is stored in your browser so you can refresh without losing guesses. A local streak counter increases when you win consecutive UTC days. Clearing site data resets local progress; the global daily answer itself is unchanged.

Why play a food attribute puzzle?

Food knowledge is uneven in a useful way. You might recognize Mexican methods before you know Thai difficulty bands, or you might lock Hot and Vegetarian early while still hunting the cuisine. Pantrydle rewards that patchwork expertise. It is also a calm daily ritual: one puzzle, eight tries, a shareable grid, and no account required.

The dish bank is original for this site. Names are chosen to be recognizable, not to promote a restaurant chain. If two dishes feel similar in the real world, their attribute rows still differ somewhere — method, time, difficulty, or vegetarian status — so the comparison grid remains decisive.
